Athletic Bilbao teams up with six Non-League sides in celebration of Non-League Day

Updated: Mar 21

La Liga giants Athletic Bilbao are teaming up with six Non-League sides to celebrate Non-League Day.

The club's generosity benefits Altrincham, Bromsgrove Sporting, Evesham United, Sheppey United, Steyning Town, and Witton Albion.

Those six clubs have been chosen because they play in the same red and white striped shirt colours as the 24-time Copa Del Rey winners.

All clubs have been gifted a bespoke flag with the club crests and Euskal Non-League Dayflag to fly at their grounds.

The clubs have also included men's and women's Athletic Bilbao shirts to raffle off at their next league fixture.

The eight-time La Liga winners have also been promoting other Non-League clubs who the Spanish giants have faced before.

The clubs included in the thread were:

  • Civil Service FC

  • Corinthian-Casuals

  • Eastbourne Town

  • Dulwich Hamlet FC

These four clubs have all faced the giants of Spain at least once in their history.

Civil Service FC were Athletic Club's first-ever English opponents back in 1911.

They played the Lions four more times between 1911 and 1914. In May last year, they visited Palacio Ibaigane to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the last match.

Before Corinthian FC and Casuals FC merged, Casuals visited Bilbao for a game in January 1923.

Dulwich Hamlet faced the Lions at San Mames twice in 1921.

And finally, the South Coast team Eastbourne Town visited Bilbao in May 1912.

With the Spanish side still doing so well in La Liga, it is fantastic to see the club still willing to help out and promote the English game and has not forgotten the sides they have faced in England's Non-League.

Here are the fixtures and venues for the clubs in which Athletic Club are supporting for Non-League Day this Saturday:

  • Altrincham vs Barnet- at the J.Davidson Stadium

  • Bromsgrove Sporting vs Banbury United- at the Victoria Ground

  • Evesham United vs Cribbs United at the Spiers & Hartwell Stadium

  • Sheppey United vs Deal Town at the Total Power Stadium

  • Steyning Town vs Margate at the Birchwood Ground

  • Witton Albion vs Avro FC at the Wincham Park Ground.

All games kick-off at 3 pm.
