Match report: Longridge Town FC vs Southport FC

Southport’s singular goal made the difference as they travelled to Longridge Town and beat the hosts 1-0 in the semi final of the Lancashire FA Trophy.

It was Longridge that started the game off strong as their striker, Liam Atkinson forced a good save for the keeper as he cut inside and shot near post.

It was the hosts that kept on the pressure, as Ryan Mclean put a tempting cross into Atkinson for him to take the ball with a diving header, but it only just glanced wide.

Southport came back strong though as some good play from them down the right wing ended up with a shot that ricocheted off the post.

With quick succession, Southport receive another good chance when Dior Angus headed the ball off the bar and led Kier Barry to make a save afterwards.

After a quiet 10 minutes and Southport dominating possession, Longridge tried one from a far but the ball ended wide.

Ethan Edmundson came in clutch with a outstanding tackle to deny Angus who had a clear goal scoring opportunity.

It took 35 minutes for Southport to break the deadlock through Danny Lloyd who whipped in a corner but it ended up in the back of the net.

The visitors went into the half time with a goal to their name and one stop closer to the final.

A double change for the hosts and what a substitution it could have been as Rio Alston put in a superb cross but all Atkinson could do was scramble at it and the ball goes out of play.

After an end to end second half, Longridge received a penalty in the 79th minute, Jack Anderton was the man to step up but couldn’t convert for his team and the Reds are left still behind in this game.

The game fizzled out and Southport stayed in the corner of the pitch.

The Yellows made their way to the final of the Lancashire FA trophy when they will face Bacup Borough on the 10th May.
